Negative health & social outcome of media

Marcella Nunez-Smith of Yale School of Medicine and his team spent more than 18 months studying some 173 researches conducted over the last 30 years on how media affects the lives of children – ‘…obesity, tobacco, drug and alcohol use, sexual behavior, low academic achievement and ADHD’.

Turns out that 80 percent of the research efforts show a ‘link between a negative health outcome and media hours or content’. The study says there is ‘…above average evidence to support the link between media exposure and drug use, alcohol use and low academic achievement.’ This research focused on television, music, movies…

We can wait for more such research to conclusively show that the same is true for web, social-networking sites, cell phones, and video games. Or we as parents can sit up and take notice…

I APPRECIATE THE SOCIALLY-RELEVANT RESEARCH ON THE ‘NEGATIVE HEALTH & SOCIAL OUTCOME OF MEDIA. THE DEVELOPMENT OF TELEVISON AND OF LATE THE FM RADIO HAS NOT DONE ANYTHING FOR THE OVERALL DEVELOPMENT OR GOODNESS OF THE SOCIETY. THOUGH THEY ARE CLAIMED AS POWER MEDIA, THE CONTENT, THE PURPOSE AND THE MANNER THE MEDIA USED ARE PRIMARILY FOR NARROW MEANS AND PERSONAL PROFITS. ITS TRUE THAT THE GROWTH AND EXPANSION OF THESE MEDIA DO MORE HARM TO THE SOCIETY. THE MORE VULNERABLE SECTION FALL PREY TO THEIR TRICKS ARE CHILDREN, WOMEN AND RURAL MASS. THEIR EDUCATION, MINDSET, ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE SOCIETY, ARE TERRIBLY AFFECTED.THE MEDIA IN THE HANDS OF RICH AND PRIVATE DO IRREPAIABLE TO THE SOCIAL VALUES, ETHICS WHICH IN TURN RUIN THE YOUNGER GENERATION. FOR THE SAKE OF PROFITS, THE MEDIA IN THE HANDS OF POLITICIANS TAKE ALL EFFORTS TO UNDERPLAY THE ROLE OF PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTING. MOREOVER, I AM PERSONALLY DISGUSTED WITH THE HYPOCROCY OF THE EXPERTS, POLICY-MAKERS AND SCHOLARS FOR NOT PLAYING RESPONSIBLE ROLE IN THE INTERESTS OF THE SOCIETY. AND IN THAT CASE I HOPE THAT THE GOOD=INTENTIONED FEW THROUGH NGOs CAN DO THE NEEDFUL TO THE SOCIETY. AWARENESS ON SOCIAL APATHY SHOULD BE CREATED BY NGOs IN THE VERNACULAR MEDIA, ONLY BY WHICH RESULTS COULD BE FRUITFUL. AS AN INDIVIDUAL I AM READY FOR VOLUNTARY SERVICE AT THE MAXIMUM EXTENT POSSIBLE. WISHING THE RESEARCH ALL SUCCESS. TAMIL NADU IS A CLASSIC EXAMPLE WHERE THE EXPANSION OF ELECTRONIC MEDIA AND COMMUNICATION NETWORK IS TREMENDOUS AND ITS ADVERSE IMPACT ON THE SOCIETY IS HIGHLY DEPLORABLE.
